Siem Reap & Angkor Wat (4 days)
Siem Reap is home to its world-famous Angkor Wat temple complex. One of the most visited and most unique places for backpackers, travellers, tourists and locals in Southeast Asia and the world. Definitely a must is the sunrise tour. Angkor Wat, Bayon, Angkor Thom are just some of them to mention. Also visit the ones who are further away, not only in the main district.
For party backpackers the so called “pub street” (Street 08) is almost as famous as Angkor Wat itself 😉
Be aware that you will NOT be alone if you go there for the sunrise!
Battambang (2 days)
The Bamboo train and the bat cave are the 2 most popular things to do in Battambang. If you are short on time you can skip Battambang, but if you have time it’s definitely worth a visit.
Phnom Phen (3 days)
You will find a lot of the sad history in and around the capital of Cambodia. Stroll along the streets in Phnom Phen and take a look at the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. The Killing Fields “Choeung Ek” and the S21 Prison Museum “Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum” are two of the main places to visit to experience and learn more about the sad history of Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge.
Kampot (2 days)
A good place for a stopover between Phnom Phen and Sihanoukville. There are some chilled guesthouses along the river and you can rent a scooter and drive up to the Bokor National Park.
Sihanoukville City (1 day)
Sihanoukville is the gateway to the stunning Koh Rong Islands. Sihanoukville itself has as well a beach but it can get very crowded and it is not as nice as the nearby Otres 1 or Otres 2 beach.
Sihanoukville Otres 2 Beach (4 days)
Sihanoukville Otres 2 beach is a good place for some chilled beach days outside of busy Sihanoukville. Do you want to experience a different party night in between? Head to the Kerfuffle Jungle Party, their setup is great in the middle of the jungle.
Koh Rong (3 days)
Picture perfect white sand beaches and turquoise crystal clear water, that’s what you can expect on the two Koh Rong Islands. On Koh Rong there are more options for party and the main beach is packed with restaurants, bars and people. Be careful what you eat and drink on Koh Rong island, as the island is infamous for getting food poison. If you walk 20minutes along the coast, you will reach an almost empty dream beach.
Koh Rong Samloem (4 days)
On Koh Rong Samloem you will find the perfect gateway for relaxed beach days and walks on the island. I recommend staying on Saracen Bay. For a nice sunset you can walk 20min to the other side of the island. Koh Rong Samloem is one of my favorite island. Make sure you bring enough cash with you, as there is no ATM on the island. It happend to many travellers that they had to go back to the mainland to get more cash and go back to the island, as they wanted to stay longer.
Transportation in Cambodia
Day and night buses are the main way of transportation in Cambodia. Despite some bad stories about night buses I have read online, I never had any problems regarding safety myself. I took several different bus companies and all of them were good (Giant Ibis, Mekong Express, Virak Buntham).
Best time to visit Cambodia
The best time to visit Cambodia is from November until April.
