! You better Belize it !
Belize is the country of the Garifuna culture along the coast and Mayan people if you go more inland. It is as well a hitchhiking paradise. I can highly recommend visiting Belize. It was not on my list at the beginning, but I definitely don’t regret it that I went there. It is not only the amazing things to do in Belize which are worth it, but as well the people are super relaxed and almost all of them are happy to see foreigners.
4 Amazing things to do in Belize
Quick overview
- Caye Caulker
- Hopkins
- Placencia
- San Ignacio
Caye Caulker (5 days)
GO SLOW is the motto on Cay Caulker! You will only see a few golf carts as transportation option. Theoretically the place to relax, if you don’t party too hard 😉
Manatees, Sharks, Sting Rays, Turtles, Dolphins, Caribbean ocean, party and the best and cheapest lobster, that’s what you get when you visit Caye Caulker. And you can do all barefoot. Head over with a boat to Koko King, it’s basically the only real beach on Caye Caulker.
Hopkins (4 days)
Not many tourists find their way to super laid back Hopkins, which is amazing. If you go to a restaurant or to one of the three bars in town, most of the time you are the only foreigner. Get into the local Garifuna culture and join a nightly drum session at the beach. Furthermore, you can do a night river crocodile and plankton tour along the mangroves. It’s the most bright and glowing plankton I have ever seen.
Placencia (3 days)
Placencia is the more touristy version of Hopkins, but still laid back and not touristy at all. You will find a few bars and restaurants and a beach for yourself.
San Ignacio (2 days)
In San Ignacio you can visit the nearby ATM caves and the Maya ruins.
Transportation in Belize
Hitchhike! It’s very common in Belize to hitchhike everywhere and I felt every time super safe. People are used to it, as locals do it as well all the time. They are so friendly and very curious where you are from and what you are doing in Belize. The best way to get in touch with locals! Despite the time you need to wait to find somebody who drives in your direction, it will be faster at the end than taking the chicken bus (old American school bus). If you are travelling with a group of people or not up to the hitchhiking adventure, than using the chicken buses is the way to travel in Belize.
